PM: The UN should do more

27/10/2008 // On the UN Day the Norwegian Prime Minister emphasise the important role of the United Nations, but writes in an op-ed:”UN is often criticised for not being effective enough. We have to take this critic serious".

The text in Norwegian.

The world’s population is better educated, healthier and live longer than ever before. We communicate faster, travel more and technology breaks new boundaries. Still poverty persists in many areas of the world. Every three seconds a child dies. Every minute a woman dies in childbirth.

The contrasts are staggering. In a world characterised by unprecedented know-how and wealth, 2008 is proving to be a year of crises: Climate change, the oil price hike, the food crisis, and now the crisis in the global financial markets. How do we begin to handle it all? There are many answers – not all of them good. But a part of the answer will always be the UN.
