Below is a review of Norwegian financial contributions to 25 UN or UN related organizations in 2012. All numbers are in million US dollar and indicate yearly contributions unless otherwise stated. The figures are delivered from Norad,The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. On Norad’s web pages you’ll find statistics of Norwegian donations to the UN, both old and new.

FIVE FUNDS AND PROGRAMMES

UN Development Program (UNDP)
About the cooperation:
The UNDP has a special position within the UN system as it links the central parts of the UN with UN activites at country level in the different attempts at creating development and reducing poverty.
Total contributions: USD 318,01 million

UN Children's Fund (UNICEF)
About the cooperation:
Through its global advocacy role for children, UNICEF mobilizes political will and resources for improving children's foundation rights regarding e.g. health, clean water, education and protection.

UN Population Fund (UNFPA)
About the cooperation:
The UNFPA's mandate matches Norwegian emphasis on human rights, equality as well as an integrated approach to combating HIV and AIDS and other diseases and health related issues.

World Food Program (WFP)
About the cooperation:
The WFP's overall mandate is to fight hunger and provide food security. The Norwegian donations support flexible and short-term relief and food aid during and after crises and disasters.

UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
About the cooperation: UNIFEM's promotion of women's interests and rights continues and is strengthened through the umbrella of the new UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN).

UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
About the cooperation: UNESCO's mandate includes achieving peace and security through cooperation in science, education, communication and culture, among which Norway puts emphasis on Education for All (EFA).

Mandatory contribution: USD 0,776 million
Voluntary contributions: USD 9,758 million

Food Agriculture Organization (FAO)
About the cooperation: FAO works towards food security for all through agriculture, among it fishing and forestry. These are important issues for Norway, in part due to the critical role of forests in preventing climate change.

International Labour Organization (ILO)
About the cooperation: The ILO gives regulations and guidelines for issues related to labour, and among them important Norwegian priorities such as preventing child labour and promoting gender equality.

World Health Organization (WHO)
About the cooperation:
The WHO provides leadership, norms and coordinated authority in the health area, particularily for developing countries. Maternal health, child mortality and HIV/AIDS are among the priority areas.

UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
About the cooperation: UNIDO supports developing and transition economies in increasing productive activity and offering trade assistance as means of combating poverty and environmental degradation, mainly in Africa.

UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)
About the cooperation: UN HABITAT is concerned with the problems stemming from increased urbanization around the world, with the goal to make this development sustainable with regards to e.g. water and sanitation.

Mandatory contribution: USD 13,572 million
Voluntary contributions: USD 2,358 million

UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
About the cooperation: UNEP promotes coordination and oversees implementation within the UN system on the environmental field. It should also come up with solutions about how to handle environmental challenges.

Voluntary contributions: USD 5,138 million

UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN REDD)
About the cooperation: UN-REDD involves both UNDP, UNEP and FAO in working towards reducing deforestation and forest degradation and thereby combating climate change. Norway has put high priority on the programme.

UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UN AIDS)
About the cooperation: UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is an innovative partnership that leads and inspires the world in achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
About the cooperation: UNHCR offers assistance and protection to people who are refugees due to ethnic group, religion, political views or social group. One example of a task is to provide shelter for internally displaced people.

Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
About the cooperation: When disaster or conflict strikes and the international community, including the UN, comes to the rescue, OCHA's role is to make everything run effectively and smoothly at the national levels.

UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)
About the cooperation: UNRWA's mandate is similar to UNHCR's with the exception that it works exclusively with helping the almost 5 million Palestinian refugees in Libanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank.

Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI)
About the cooperation: GAVI's goal is to try and ensure the same access to vaccines for children in developing as in developed countries. This task includes among other thing to make use of innovative sources of financing.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM)
About the cooperation: The Global Fund provides some of the financial backing needed to achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goal 6 about combating AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

The World Bank (WB)
About the cooperation: The World Bank's mandate is to reduce poverty by ensuring sustainable economic growth in developing countries. The Bank is also engaged with other pressing issues, such as combating climate change.

The Asian Development Bank (AsDB)
About the cooperation: AsDB provides grants and loans to vulnerable states in the Asian and Pacific regions, again with the aim to reducing and combating poverty. Other tasks are regional integration and preventing climate change.

The African Development Bank (AfDB)
About the cooperation: Antoher regional Bank, the AfDB promotes social and economic development in Africa through granting resources that improve e.g. good governance, infrastructure, education, and the private sectors.

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)
About the cooperation: IFAD supports local communities to increase their incomes and food security through agriculture. Natural resources, like soil and water, and improved technology are among the focus areas.

Global Environment Facility (GEF)
About the cooperation: GEF focuses exclusively on global environmental challenges, and particularly biodiversity, climate change, international water issues, land degredation, protecting the ozone layer and organic pollutants.
