Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has become member of the UN High-level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing. The group was recently appointed by the UN Secretary-General, to mobilise the financing promised for efforts against climate change during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen last December. The General Assembly adopted Friday 26 February a new follow-up resolution on the Goldstone report with broad support. 98 countries voted in favor, 31 abstained and 7 voted against. Norway voted in favor of the resolution which is a modified version of the GA 64/10 resolution adopted on 5 November 2009. Read more >

Trainers and graduates

Norway has assisted the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in training 120 South Sudanese police officers. The graduates will be sent to train around 1000 local police officers on election security during the forthcoming election this April. Burkina Faso and Moldova delivered their instruments of ratification of the Convention on Cluster Munitions to the United Nations this month. “Haiti's people still needs our help. The UN has so far received only half of what it has requested. That’s why we will double the Norwegian contribution to humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. The aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti set a grim backdrop to the first UNICEF executive board meeting of 2010. Delegates gathered at the UN headquarters in New York from 12 to 14 January to discuss the departure of UNICEF’s Executive Director Ann Veneman and the need for sustained support for the fund, but the situation in Haiti became a natural talking point. The UN General Assembly held an extra-ordinary session today to discuss the situation in Haiti following the devastating earthquake which struck near the capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday. Millions of people in the Caribbean nation have been affected. Human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity was the topic of a panel debate that Norway organized with the UN Permanent Missions of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, France and the Netherlands on Thursday 10 December. The event was especially timely as several countries are looking to tighten legislation that criminalizes lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people. Read more >
