Statement to the Security Council on 22 July 2009 by Mr. Ola Brevik Chargé d’Affaires a.i.

Norway urged the Security Council to strengthen the protection of women and girls in armed conflict and to prevent sexual violence in a statement given by Ambassador Mona Juul to the Security Council.

Norway confirmed that it will send one of its new frigates to assist in efforts to safeguard the coast of Somalia in a statement given in the Security Council Friday, March 20th. Norway recognizes the remarkeable changes in Somalia over the past few months, but says there is still a long way to go.

During the Security Council open debate on the the new Secretary General report, Norway highlighted three important issues concerning the situation in Afghanistan; the elections, women and joint international effort.

Norway stated, in the Security Council open debate Wednesday March 18th, that it is fully committed to support the African Union in its peacekeeping and peace building efforts. But the primary responsibility for responding to threats to international peace and security remains with the Security Council.

Norway is concerned that Parliament again has postponed the long-awaited debate on the recommendations of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation on the Indonesian occupation. It is our hope that Parliament will set a new date for the debate as soon as possible, Ambassador Mona Juul said in the statement held 19 February 2009. She further conveyed Norway's support of an extension of UNMIT’s mandate for a period of 12 months.

As Norwegian Foreign Minister, I add my voice to all those who demand an immediate effective and viable cease fire and cessation of hostilities, Foreign Minister Støre said in his address to the UN Security Council 6 January 2009.

- We will be open for requests for technical assistance in order to strengthen national capacity in the region to combat piracy, and Norway is ready to make a contribution to the naval operations in the area during 2009, said Norway in the Security Council debate on the situation in Somalia.
