General Assembly: Committees

Councellor Thoralf Stenvold of the Permanent Mission of Norway to the UN presented the statement below to the Third Committee on 3 November, 2009. It deals with the "Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, questions relating to refugees, returnees and displaced persons and humanitarian questions."

Second Secretary Daniel Hirsch of the Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations presented the following statement on sustainable development to the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly on 3 November, 2009.

Andreas Løvold, first secretary at the Permament Mission of Norway to the United Nations, gave the following statement in the Fourth Committee on 2 November, 2009. It deals primarily with the issue of the dire financial state of UNRWA - the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Adviser Børge Alsvik made the following statement in relation to the report of the International Law Commission on behalf of the Nordic countries on 28 October, 2009. His statement covered general issues as well as topics on the Commissions agenda, such as reservations to treaties, expulsion of aliens, shared natural resources and the obligation to extradite or prosecute.

Deputy Permanent Representative, Mona Juul, presented Norway's statement on the proposed UN budget for 2010-2011 to the Fifth Committee on 29 October, 2009

Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mona Juul, held the following statement in the Third Committee on 27 October, 2009. The statement addresses agenda item 69 (b and c): "Human rights questions, including alternative approaches for improving the effective enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms."

Norway's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Morten Wetland, presented the statement below to the Fourth Committee on 26 October 2009. The statement was part of the debate on the "Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects."

Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Hilde Janne Skorpen, presented Norway's statement on 22 October, 2009 in the First Committee of the General Assembly in New York. The statement was part of the thematic debate on disarmament machinery.

Julie Jacobsen Takahashi presented Norway's statement in the 2nd Committee on 21 October, 2009. The theme was "Globalization and interdependence: Preventing and combating corrupt practices and transfer of assets of illicit origin and returning such assets, in particular to the countries of origin, consistent with the United Nations Convention against Corruption."

Counsellor Åsmund Eriksen gave the Norwegian statement on the scope and application of universal jurisdiction in the 6th Committee on 20 October 2009. The term 'universal jurisdiction' refers to a state's ability to undertake criminal proceedings against a foreign national, for an alleged crime committed outside the country. Norway believes that universal jurisdiction is an important element in the fight against impunity.
