"As stated during the recent deliberations of the General Assembly on Afghanistan, Norway believes that the situation calls for a broad and comprehensive strategy", State Secretary Raymond Johansen said in the open discussion on the report of the Security Council mission to Afghanistan.

" We must act now to establish an international ban on cluster munitions", ambassador Mona Juul said in the open debate on Civilians and Armed Conflicts in the Security Council.

Norway welcomes the opportunity to take part in a wider international partnership determined to enhance the protection of children affected by armed conflict. Ambassador Mona Juul's statement in the Security Council:

"Norway condemns this massive use of military force by the Israeli Defence Forces in their attempts to stop the firing of homemade rockets from Gaza," Ambassador Mona Juul said in the following statement.

Mr. President, Norway welcomes and strongly supports resolution 1701. We strongly encourage the parties to do their utmost to maintain the cessation of hostilities and to transform it into a lasting ceasefire. We support the Secretary General in his view that the recent Israeli military operation in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon is in violation of the said cessation of hostilities and urge all parties to refrain from further actions that undermines resolution 1701. Madam President, Norway is following the dramatic situation in and around Gaza with deep concern. The situation is very serious. All parties must exercise the utmost restraint to prevent the situation from getting completely out of control. The abduction of the Israeli soldier and the killing of the young Israeli settler are unacceptable acts which we deplore. Mr. President, I want to thank ambassador Jones Parry for his briefing and I would also like to thank the Security Council mission to Sudan for a comprehensive report on a very complex situation. We support his 12 concrete recommendations on how the Council could contribute to the fight against the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, and welcome the useful update on Council action to implement them.
