Mr. President, Norway welcomes and strongly supports resolution 1701. We strongly encourage the parties to do their utmost to maintain the cessation of hostilities and to transform it into a lasting ceasefire. We support the Secretary General in his view that the recent Israeli military operation in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon is in violation of the said cessation of hostilities and urge all parties to refrain from further actions that undermines resolution 1701. Norway is pleased that the UN Security Council will for the first time pass a resolution on small arms and light weapons. This underlines the serious security dimension of the problem, and heralds more decisive and consistent action on the part of the Council. It is a welcome signal...

Mr President, Norway would like to thank the Secretary General for his extensive report on Afghanistan. Several achievements have been made in Afghanistan during the Bonn Process, in particular in building a democratic framework. However, as the Secretary General points out, Afghanistan still faces tremendous challenges. At the London Conference, we renewed our joint commitments to the Afghan people. Norway fully endorsed the Afghanistan Compact and the Interim Afghanistan National Development Strategy. These documents provide the necessary framework for further development to take place in...
