At the plenary meeting of the General Assembly today, 15 March, Norway welcomed the establishment of the Human Rights Council. On the issue of whether the Human Rights Council will be a weak instrument, Ambassador Løvald said that the text adopted is a compromise and cannot be an ideal blueprint for anyone. The Council is however an unique opportunity to start putting in place a reinvigorated system for promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms around the world.
