“The international atmosphere has never before been so conducive in terms of disarmament, but the NPT is under bigger strain than ever. This is a paradox. We have high expectations towards the NPT Review Conference, but we are far from guaranteed a successful outcome. The coming weeks in New York will be critical in terms of NPT’s survival. A successful review conference will make it easier to move towards our goal of a safer world without nuclear weapons,” State Secretary Gry Larsen said.
Ms. Larsen led the Norwegian delegation at the opening of the Review Conference, which takes place from May 3-28.
“We need to have higher ambitions than simply to avoid failure. We must agree on clear and concrete goals that encompass disarmament, non-proliferation and civilian use”, Ms. Larsen said.
