High expectations for the NPT Review Conference

5/5/2010 // The atmosphere has never been better in terms taking dramatic steps towards nuclear disarmament. Norway stands ready to act. This was the main message in State Secretary Gry Larsen’s statement at the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York on Tuesday May 4.

“The international atmosphere has never before been so conducive in terms of disarmament, but the NPT is under bigger strain than ever. This is a paradox. We have high expectations towards the NPT Review Conference, but we are far from guaranteed a successful outcome. The coming weeks in New York will be critical in terms of NPT’s survival. A successful review conference will make it easier to move towards our goal of a safer world without nuclear weapons,” State Secretary Gry Larsen said.

Ms. Larsen led the Norwegian delegation at the opening of the Review Conference, which takes place from May 3-28.

“We need to have higher ambitions than simply to avoid failure. We must agree on clear and concrete goals that encompass disarmament, non-proliferation and civilian use”, Ms. Larsen said.
