Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has received the "Champion for Global Change Award" from the UN Foundation and the UN Association - USA (UNA-USA). He is honoured for the work he and Norway's government has done in promoting global health, climate initiatives and energy for all-agenda. Today the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched this year’s Human Development Report. The report includes the 2011 Human Development Index, which measures countries’ ability to provide opportunities for people to improve their living conditions. Norway is at the top of this index. The UN has for the first time put Non-communicative deceases (NCD) on the agenda. All 193 member states agreed on a declaration to target the global threat that diabetes, pulmonary diseases, cancer and cardio diseases represents, both for health-, economy- and social development. Read more

The 2011 High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS concluded Friday. The final declaration includes important references to populations at higher risk of the disease, men having sex with men being one of them. Read more

Norwegian UN delegates were mainly in listening mode as members of civil society discussed the upcoming High-level meeting on HIV/AIDS. The participants included leaders of religious, education, business and community-based groups from many different countries. Read more

State Secretary Ingrid Fiskaa has launched Norway's new Taxation for Development programme, which is aimed at helping poor countries increase their own tax revenues. Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania are the first three countries Norway is cooperating with in this field. Read more

The new head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, presented his vision for the Fund in New York on February 1st. Dr. Osotimehin visited Norway on February 10 and took part in a debate on how to improve maternal health in the developing world. Read more

Norway this week renewed its funding for UNDP’s work in the areas of democratic governance, crisis prevention and early recovery, and environment and energy. Altogether, Norway is providing USD 41.6 million (NOK 250 million) in funding. Read more

The Government of Norway has decided to cancel Liberia’s entire debt to Norway. The debt is around NOK 49 million (USD 8 million). “I am pleased that as of today, Liberia has no outstanding debt to Norway,” said Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim. Read more

In her role as Special Representative for UNAIDS, Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess of Norway visited Cylar House, a housing and treatment center for people living with HIV in New York. Crown Princess Mette Marit met residents and staff during her tour of the center which is part of Housing Works, the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States. Read more

At a special event at the United Nations in New York, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health, "Every Woman, Every Child". USD 40 billion was pledged in resources to the advancement of women’s and children’s health. On the margins of the Opening Session of the 65th UN General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre and the Minister of External Relations of Brazil Celso Amorim, brought together foreign ministers from seven countries to strengthen the fight for improving health for all.
