Trygve Lie Symposium: Combating Hate Speech: Everyone's Responsibility

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Peace Institute (IPI) are hosting the Sixth Annual Trygve Lie Symposium on Fundamental Freedoms.

The Symposium will bring together representatives from civil society, the media, experts, and high-level representatives from the United Nations and member states to discuss the issue of combatting hate speech.

The panel discussion will be chaired by H.E. Mr. Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway.

Recent years have shown a steady increase in hate speech directed toward minorities and other vulnerable groups and individuals. Every day, serious instances of intolerance and discrimination affect different people, be it based on their actual or perceived nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability.

The existence of such discrimination raises questions regarding how we can combat hate speech and at the same time protect the fundamental freedom of expression. How do media actors strike the balance between their responsibility to prevent the dissemination of intolerant and discriminatory attitudes and their editorial independence and integrity? What role can other stakeholders play in this area, be they UN bodies, states, government officials, civil society actors, or human rights defenders?

The panelists will provide brief comments, followed by an open, dynamic discussion with the audience. We look forward to discussing these issues and hope that you can join us for this important and timely event.
