Report Launch: Violating Children’s Rights

Human Rights Watch arrange this event after the launch of a global report on "Addressing Harmful Practices against Children in Plural Legal Systems, with a Special Focus on Africa" on October 15th from 18:30-20:00PM.

The International NGO Council on Violence against Children presents a report on harmful practices based on tradition, culture, religion or superstition that violate the rights of children. These practices, which are perpetrated and condoned by parents or significant adults within the child’s extended family and community, cause thousands of infants and children to die annually and negatively impact the childhoods and development of millions more worldwide. This report is an initial attempt to list these practices, highlight measures already taken to challenge them, and makes recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders to ensure their prohibition and full elimination.

Speakers:

  • HRH Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations
  • Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children
  • Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Independent expert and author of the UN Study on Violence against Children
